Hangers: Autumn Anime, Week Four

This Week: Kill la Kill, Nagi No Asukara, Miss Monochrome, Coppelion, Monogatari Series: Second Season, Non Non Biyori, Gingitsune: Messenger of the Fox Gods, and Gundam Build Fighters.

What a strange and unusual week. This is at least part of why I do not subscribe to “three episode” rules.

Some productions changed thematic gears, others artistic ones. What seemed like previously pretty solid ground for a few is now potentially giving way to marshy swamps.

Pendant Light: Boogiepop and Others. The Imaginator and Myself.

I have a stranger relationship with Boogiepop Phantom than I do any other anime.

It is entirely possible I may not have an association with any other piece of media in the rather particular way this series and I have danced around each other over the years.

Mothballs: The Fish Attack At The End Of The Universe

This Week: Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack and Roots Search

Thus far for my personal anime horror reflections this month I have gone into antsy gore and nudity, slasher and splatter, and borderline exploitation.

I thought it was high time then, with this second to last entry for this month on the subject, for some incredibly dumb horror before I finish up with something special next week.

Hangers: Autumn Anime, Week Three

This Week: Kill la Kill, Nagi No Asukara, Miss Monochrome, Coppelion, Monogatari Series: Second Season, Non Non Biyori, Gingitsune: Messenger of the Fox Gods, and Gundam Build Fighters.

Many folks I know ascribe to the notion of a “three episode rule” when it comes to selecting what to keep and drop around this time of the season. The productions have had some time to stretch their legs, jog a few laps, and we get an idea of who may or may not be making the varsity team.

Much like many fantasy sports groups though, I don’t use such trap doors to get myself off of a sinking ship, so none of these shows I am following will be traded away regardless of how enjoyable or terrible they are proving to be.

Pendant Light: Anime Horror and Watching Nice Things

As I have been granting a rather extensive amount of time this month to seasonally Halloween appropriate anime affairs (one previous column dealing with the holiday in a friendly fun focus via Dirty Pair, three weekly entries on horror and gore back catalogue resurrections, with two more distinct pieces still in the pipeline) a few questions have been sent along to me.

In summarizing them and in so many fewer words: Why and how can I bring myself to watch so many disgusting anime? Don’t I just want to watch some nice things?

Mothballs: Violence Jack

This Week: Violence Jack: Harlem Bomber, Violence Jack: Evil Town, and Violence Jack: Hell’s Wind

As I have been already on a personal gore and horror backcatalogue theme for October, and the currently airing Kill la Kill has so much raw Go Nagai inspiration in its tank, Violence Jack seemed like a natural fit to spin back around to doing some light revisitng for this week.

While this is normally a space where I talk about any and all productions I watched that are not currently airing, and I did also view all of Gatchaman Crowds in the past seven days, it does not really fit with the theme I have been running with for these Friday writeups this month. That said, I did cover my thoughts on it earlier in the week if you are so inclined.

Hangers: Autumn Anime, Week Two

This Week: Kill la Kill, Nagi No Asukara, Miss Monochrome, Coppelion, Monogatari Series: Second Season, Non Non Biyori, Gingitsune: Messenger of the Fox Gods, and Gundam Build Fighters.

The problem with deciding to write about currently airing shows this season is I found myself convinced into picking up three more, even if they won’t all be week to week affairs (that’s what I like to tell myself).

Monogatari finished an arc, so I actually get to talk about that. Pupa is still missing. But otherwise, all things being equal, while this will be long I think I have a solid foundation for these posts for the rest of the season.
